Starling Business Account Overview

Starling Bank is a UK-regulated bank, fully authorised by the FCA and PRA. Unlike some challenger banks, Starling holds a full banking licence, which means customer deposits are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) up to £85,000 per depositor.

Spaces: Practical Tax Management

Starling's Spaces feature allows you to ring-fence money within your account without opening a separate account. For sole traders and limited company directors, this is practically useful for setting aside VAT, corporation tax and income tax from each payment received. You can create multiple Spaces, label them, and automate transfers into them using Starling's Rules.

Accounting Integrations

Starling integrates directly with FreeAgent, Xero and QuickBooks at no additional cost. The FreeAgent integration is particularly valued by contractors and freelancers. Transactions appear in your accounting software automatically, which eliminates manual bank reconciliation.

Limitations

Starling does not offer a built-in invoicing tool (unlike Tide). Cash deposit capability via the Post Office carries a fee. There is no business savings account option directly within the Starling app, though the Spaces feature partially compensates for this.

Verdict

Starling is one of the strongest all-round business bank accounts available in the UK in 2026. The combination of no monthly fee, unlimited free transfers, full FSCS protection, Spaces for tax management and FreeAgent integration makes it particularly well-suited to sole traders, freelancers and contractors. For businesses that need invoicing tools, Tide may be a better fit. For businesses that handle significant cash, a high street bank account may be more practical.
